Preserving the Social, Commercial & Cultural Heritage of Watertown, Connecticut
The Watertown History Museum, formerly known as the Watertown Historical Society, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to safeguarding and sharing the rich history of Watertown. Established in 1945, the organization’s mission has always been to collect, preserve, and interpret local history for future generations.
Originally settled in 1701 and known as Wooster-Westbury, this area became officially incorporated as the Town of Watertown in May 1780. From those early settlers, the community has flourished and grown—shaping the vibrant town we know today.
For decades, the museum’s growing collection of documents, photographs, and artifacts found its home on the second floor of the Fire District building at 22 Deforest Street (1968–2016). After several years in storage, a new chapter began in late 2019, when the museum moved to its current location at 401 Main Street. Since then, the museum has welcomed hundreds of visitors, offering engaging exhibits, educational programming, and a meaningful way to connect with local heritage.
